Dubai

Dubai is a fantastic choice for a stop-over or for a holiday. With the world's tallest building and biggest shopping mall, it is a place of superlatives: the most amazing man made archipelago, some of the best hotels and fantastic beaches. It also has ancient traditions, wonderful souks and great desert experiences.

Also, Dubai is the hub of Emirates Airline, which offers long haul flights from the UK to several destinations in Africa and the Indian Ocean, so it is a great place for a stop-over.

Qatar

Less well known, but no less opulent, Qatar has made a huge investment in museums and public art. As well as extraordinary buildings there are fantastic museums and art galleries to go with the brilliant beaches, mega-shopping, desert experiences and even kayaking in mangrove swamps.

Qatar Airlines offers long haul flights to some of the less easily accessible destinations in Africa and the Indian Ocean, so this is a really attractive stop-over destination.

Abu Dhabi

Capital of the United Arab Emirates and centre of a much larger state than the other two, Abu Dhabi offers a very wide range of attractions. It also boasts extraordinary architecture, some of it more traditional, and some really ancient, but no less beautiful for that. It has great theme parks and adventure parks, superb golf courses, an island nature reserve, wonderful desert resorts and of course, amazing beaches. All served by an extraordinary variety of hotels and resorts.

Air Etihad has a more limited range of long haul flights to Africa and the Indian Ocean, but it has some so it is well worth considering as a stop over destination too.
