Tremendous Toronto City Break Options
Toronto is cold in winter, with average minimum and maximum temperatures in January of -7° and -1°, accompanied by lots of snow and strong winds. Summer is warm and humid with averages of 18° and 27° in July. As the capital of Ontario, the city is the gateway to the province, with the Niagara Falls, thousands of lakes, hundreds of nature reserves, hiking and adventure trails, as well as vineyards and beautiful farmlands. But it is a very desirable destination in its own right.
Attractions
The iconic centre piece of Toronto is the CN Tower, officially designated by the American Society of Civil Engineers as one of the 7 wonders of the modern world. It is 1815 feet tall and its main pod with a revolving restaurant and observation deck is 116 storeys above the ground. Even if you don't have the stomach to do the 'edgewalk' around the observation deck, a visit is a must.
But this is not all. There are also:
- the superb, Ripley's Aquarium with 16 000 aquatic animals and over 100 displays
- the Royal Ontario Museum, which explores everything from dinosaurs on
- the Art gallery of Ontario with an unrivalled collection of Canadian art, as well as contemporary works and European masterpieces
- the hockey (the term 'ice-hockey' is not used in Canada!) hall of fame
- the Toronto Zoo, an impressive institution dedicated to ecological conservation
- the Ontario Science Centre, complete with an Omnimax movie theatre
- Canada's Wonderland, an amusement park with more than 70 rides and a huge water park
- Casa Loma, a majestic castle in the middle of the city with lush urban gardens
- Toronto Islands, a motor-car-free haven for walkers, cyclists, joggers, canoers, kayakers and picnickers, with beautiful views of the city skyline.
The Performing Arts
The Toronto Symphony Orchestra, the Canadian Opera Company and the National Ballet of Canada are all based in Toronto and they are all world class institutions. Jazz and world music, as well as classical music can be heard in the beautiful Koerner Hall, while the historic theatre district is still the home of numerous theatre companies. There are dozens of top class venues offering more intimate cabaret and other live performances.
Shopping
Shopping is a big deal in Toronto. It boasts the biggest underground shopping complex in the world, the PATH, which stretches for 16 miles under the centre of the city, housing 1200 shops and restaurants. The city also has several world leading shopping centres and malls, including:
- Bloor-Yorkville, the ultimate in style and fashion, not only in clothing, but in restaurants, art and everything else as well
- Toronto Eaton Centre
- Vaughan Mills
The St Lawrence Market, America's top rated market, and numerous local farmers' markets.
Eating Out
Toronto prides itself on having top-rated first-class cuisine from every part of the world. Whether it's Asian, European, Caribbean or American, fine dining or artisan sandwiches you're looking for; whether you want to eat at the top of the CN Tower, in the most elegant and sophisticated restaurant, on a street corner or at a farmers' market, the quality is as good as the choice.
Beer and Wine
Artisan brewing is a big thing in many parts of Canada, not least Ontario, and you will find many craft breweries and micro-breweries which offer their beers at the breweries themselves in the city of Toronto, or at restaurants throughout the city. Ontario is also a major wine producing region, so don't forget to look out for the local wines on the wine-lists.
Festivals
There is hardly any time of year when there is not a festival of some kind on in Toronto. Among these are
- The Toronto International Film Festival which happens in September every year and is the world's largest film festival.
- the Toronto Caribbean Carnival
- Pride Toronto
Sport
If you're mad about sport there is plenty to choose from in Toronto. Top of the list is hockey, with Toronto the home to the Toronto Maple Leafs. Basketball is not far behind, with the Toronto Raptors in charge. Major league baseball has the Toronto Blue Jays and in football the Toronto FC hold up their end. If you've always wanted to watch American football, you could take in one of the Toronto Argonauts matches, or you could watch Toronto Rock playing lacrosse!
Toronto could keep you happily occupied for a week or two and we can easily arrange that.
