Outstanding Ontario Holiday Options

You can fly into Toronto or Ottawa, or get there by train or by road from the east or west, or cross the border in from the USA. Ontario is an all year round destination, but what you can do differs very dramatically from one season to another. It is excellent for winter sports in winter and for hiking, biking or boating in the summer. Many, but not all of the attractions are open all year round.

Cities

Ontario has several significant cities

Toronto

Toronto is the biggest city in Canada and one of the most exciting cities in the world. It is a superb destination in its own right and has its own page in our city breaks section. With a wealth of historical, scientific and cultural attractions, extraordinary shopping, exciting architecture, beautiful spaces and fantastic cuisine, it deserves a few days visit, at least.

Ottawa

The national capital of Canada, Ottawa, is also in Ontario. Built on the beautiful Ottawa River and the Rideau Canal, Ottawa is a charming city full of history. It is a great place to go for

  • Discovering the history of Canada in any of the seven museums
  • Kayaking on the Rideau Canal or renting a cruiser to explore it's length in summer, or skating on it in the winter
  • Watching the Changing of the Guard (which will be very familiar to those who have seen it in London) and admiring the stately Parliament Buildings
  • Exploring the markets, shops and excellent restaurants.

Kingston

The first capital of Canada, Kingston is located between Toronto and Ottawa on Lake Ontario. Built predominantly out of Limestone, this striking historic city is known for its culture and music, buzzing bars and pubs, arts and crafts, and farmers' markets. It has many sights to see, including the iconic Fort Henry built in the 1830s.

Thunder Bay

Irresistible for its name alone, Thunder Bay, at the north east end of Lake Superior, is rich in history, with fascinating historical sights, most notably Fort William Historical park. It is also the gateway to the vast wilderness of northern Ontario, accessible only by light aircraft or small boat, and to the Sleeping Giant Provincial Park which boasts more than 200 species of birds.

Niagara

The most visited site in Canada is the Niagara Falls. Straddling the international border with the United States, the Horseshoe falls is the biggest of the three Niagara waterfalls, and the only one in Canada. Six million cubic feet of water goes over the crest every minute and drops 160 feet into the pool below.

You can see the Horseshoe falls in any number of ways:

  • By a cruise to the bottom of the falls
  • a helicopter ride over the falls
  • a zip-line ride across the falls
  • a journey behind the falls

You can also go to 'Niagara's Fury' a  360-degree multi-sensory theatre exploring the history of the falls, an IMAX theatre with films about the falls, or take jet-boat tours through the white waters on the Niagara River.

When you have maxed out on the falls and everything to do with them, you can take a craft brewery tour, hike some of the hundreds of miles of mapped hiking trails or enjoy any number of other entertainments.

Not far away, but very different in ambience is the 19th century town of Niagara-on-the-Lake, considered by many to be Canada's prettiest town. It is known mainly for the fact that it is the heart of a very significant wine producing region, with about 90 wineries producing top class wines.  A great tradition of local-produce-based culinary excellence has grown up around this wine industry, so that this is one of the many wonderful places for foodies in Canada.

Georgian Bay & Lake Superior

North of Toronto is the huge eastern part of Lake Huron, known as Georgian Bay. All round this bay are attractions and beauty spots that are favourite holiday destinations for Canadians as well as UK visitors.

Blue Mountain is a superb ski and snow-board resort and much, much more. A lovely pedestrian village is the heart of an area offering hiking, biking, caving, zip-lining, roller coasters, and a gondola, as well as a scrumptious apple pie trail, local breweries and wineries.

Forming the south western edge of Georgian Bay is the beautiful Bruce Peninsula with a large National Park on land, and the Fathom Five Marine Park in the water, where shipwrecks can be seen through the glass bottoms of touring boats. With beaches, caves, islands and much more to explore, there is plenty to enjoy here.

A ferry ride from Tobermory, which is at the end of the Bruce Peninsula, is Manitoulin Island, the biggest island in a freshwater lake in the world. With inland lakes of its own, this is a wonderful place for boating, hiking, fishing and exploring. It is also Home to six Anishinaabe First Nations communities, with  a rich Indigenous culture and great spiritual importance.

To the north, and back on the mainland, is Kilarney Provincial Park, a beautiful wild nature area where you can get a taste of the great Canadian wilderness. Further to the west is Sault Ste Marie, another outdoor adventure centre, as well as an important centre of indigenous heritage. From here, from June to October, you can take a one day wilderness excursion on the Agawa Canyon Tour Train.  Or you could take one of the most scenic drives in the country along the north shore of Lake Superior to the city of Thunder Bay.

Muskoka & The Algonquin Provincial Park

Stretching from the east shore of Georgian Bay eastwards to the Ottawa River is a vast area full of opportunities for exploring. Muskoka, with Lake Muskoka at its heart, is so full of lakes and rivers that it is best known for touring on steamships! Both it and the Algonquin Provincial Park, as well as the surrounding areas, are ideal for hiking, biking, kayaking or canoeing, boating, or fishing. Or, if you go there in winter, for cross country skiing and downhill skiing,  dog sledding, ice climbing, ice skating, sleigh rides, snowmobiling and snowshoeing. There are lots of charming small towns and it is an area known for its arts and crafts.

Gananoque & The 1000 Islands

Gananoque is on the banks of the St Lawrence River and the 1000 Islands (actually 1 864 if you count them properly!) are in the river between Ontario and the USA border. They are home to castles, shipwrecks, National Parks, millionaire’s mansions, cute and quirky cottages, historical sites, waterside theatres, food, music, festivals and even a casino. Most popular in the summer months, the area is beautiful all year round, especially when the fall colours are reflected in the water, the snow falls in the winter, and everything bursts into life again in spring.

Perhaps you want

  • an active holiday hiking, cycling, fishing, skiing or snow-boarding in beautiful, new and exciting settings
  • a holiday on the water in a kayak, canoe, yacht or steamboat
  • a wine tasting and buying holiday somewhere you wouldn't have thought of, or a beer tasting and culinary exploration
  • an extraordinary road trip or camping trip seeing beautiful places and exploring the natural environment
  • to pay respects to, and learn about the fascinating history and culture of the First Nations.

Whatever aspect of Ontario's astonishing wealth of opportunity you want to experience, together with our partners we can make it happen with secure and flexible bookings, making sure that we do the admin so that you can have the fun!
