You can cruise from New York or any one of several ports in the southern USA, or from the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico or Barbados and you can visit most Caribbean islands, depending on what time of year you want to go. Your cruise can be anything from 5 days to a month.

You may be surprised at how well the cost of a cruise compares with the equivalent accommodation on land.

There are almost as many cruise ships that go to the Caribbean as there are resorts on the islands, and they are as different.

For cruising in the eastern and southern Caribbean, to visit islands like Barbados, Saint Lucia and Grenada, the most popular time is the winter, from November through to April. Most of the bigger ships, in particular, leave the area to go further north or to the Mediterranean Sea for the summer months. However, there are still a couple of great options for cruises out of Barbados in July and August.

For the western Caribbean, including Mexico, Belize, Cuba, Jamaica and the Bahamas there are options all year round. many of them leave from and return to Miami, Fort Lauderdale or one of the other ports in the southern United States. There are a couple from New York and Baltimore. These are great opportunities to combine a city break in the USA with a cruise to the Caribbean.

As with resorts, there are adults only cruises and family friendly cruises and there are cruise lines that offer only fully all inclusive packages and those that offer full board with different drinks packages.

The bigger ships tend to offer a lower entry level price point, with options for comfortable interior cabins and an immense variety of dining and entertainment options. Because of sheer weight of numbers when the ships dock in ports the island experiences my not be as satisfying as they might be when you travel on a smaller ship.

The smaller ships offer superb cuisine, though with less variety. They offer entertainment, though less choice, but they often have all rooms with sea views or balconies, and some of them have only suites. Because of the much smaller numbers the pressure on shore facilities is much smaller so island experiences are easier.
