Perfect Puerto Rico Holiday Options
There is a great variety to choose from in Puerto Rico, and though the distances are not great, if you are wanting to explore, rather than to just relax, it makes a lot of sense to stay in more than one place.
San Juan And The Metro Region
San Juan is where the international airport is located. It is a city with a rich history going back more than 500 years and you can see this from its castles, coble-stone streets and picturesque buildings. The history is also on display in excellent museums.
San Juan is also a place for shopping, partying, dining and dancing. And Puerto Rico takes all these activities seriously and does them well!
As well as all this there are beautiful beaches, but not as beautiful as those outside the metro region.
The East
The eastern end of the island, with the El Yunque Rainforest, and a coastline full of exceptional beaches is perfect for a relaxing holiday. The main towns of Rio Grande and Fajardo offer a superb range of accommodation and facilities and the environment is a playground made for relaxation.
Off the coast of the main island are two outstandingly tempting extras. The islands of Culebra, home of Flamenco Beach, one of the most highly rated in the world, and Vieques, where you will find Mosquito Bay, the world's brightest bioluminescent bay. These islands can be reached by air or by ferry, and there are hotels and other accommodation options on them.
The area is also fantastic for snorkelling and scuba diving.
The West
If it's surfing you are after (and the surfing is superb), it's the west coast you will be looking for and the towns of Rincon, Isabela or Aguadilla. For swimmers, scuba divers and snorkellers there are great options here too, and, of course, this is where you will find the amazing sunsets.
As you might expect from a surfers' paradise, the atmosphere in this region is super-laidback and the options for dining and partying are excellent.
The South
Ponce, the second biggest city, and another beauty, in terms of its colonial architecture and historical monuments, is in the south. The coast in this area also offers beautiful beaches and great diving options.
The Centre
The central areas are mountainous and forested, and less developed from a tourism point of view, though you can find a wealth of activities there also, including caving, hiking, some of the most spectacular zip-lining in the world, and remnants of pre-historic civilizations.
Whether you are looking for
- a completely laid back holiday on the beach with a partner,
- a chance to party the nights away and enjoy the local beer, rum and food;
- extraordinary dive sites to extend your scuba-diving experience, or beach breaks to surf
- beautiful golf courses to exercise your passion for golf
- fun in the sun combined with some active outdoor exercise and some opportunities for your children to learn about new, interesting and fun things
Puerto Rico is a great place to go.
