The Best South African Lowveld Birding Holidays
Are you looking for the ultimate birding holiday in South Africa?
Well then the answer is probably that you should head to what is known as the lowveld, the lowland areas of Mpumalanga and Limpopo Provinces. The lowveld is a humid sub-tropical area in which a vast amount of pristine bushveld has been preserved in the flagship Kruger National Park and in tens of thousands of acres of private land, whose borders with the Kruger Park are unfenced, managed as some of the best private nature reserves in the world.
This is a truly wonderful place for anyone who loves the natural world, and for whom ecology and the preservation of these areas is important. There is a great diversity of beautiful natural vegetation, stunning landscapes, extraordinary animals and a vast number and variety of birds.
This is a place of childhood memories for us from our own childhoods and from when we took our children: every two years as they grew up. We know every road and every picnic spot, have been lucky enough to have seen most mamals at different times of day and nght, recognise many of the magnificent trees, but are still nowhere near to knowing all the birds, despite many happy days with binoculars and plenty of spirited debates about habitats, habits and identification.
We would love to share our knowledge and our passion for the place with you. As a UK registered company with ABTA and ATOL protection and a member of the Hays Group with access to all the best operators, guides, lodges, and hotels at great rates, we can be confident that we can turn our knowledge into a secure, flexible, value-for-money package that you will enjoy as much as we always enjoyed going there.

The best Options For A South African Lowveld Birding Holiday
Apart from the Kruger National Park and all the associated private game reserves in the area, there are plenty of opportunities to spot birds in the towns of Nelspruit, White River, Hoedspruit, Phalaborwa or Komatipoort, or around the Crocodile, Sabie, Letaba, Olifants and Limpopo Rivers. There are also many hotels and resorts outside the game reserves that have beautiful grounds of their own.
In the end, however, the resource that is offered by the Kruger National Park and the reserves around it is just too good to miss out on.
There are so many birds to see in this area that it seems pointless to try to list examples, so we have put together a very small gallery instead:
Imagine watching these and hundreds of others. You could be on your own with your binoculars and your bird books, or with an expert guide. You could move from place to place to experience as many different habitat varieties and see as much as possible, or you could set up a base and work back to it each day. You could stay in comfortable practical accommodation or in wonderful pampered luxury.
We can advise on all this and arrange it for you. We are completely independent of any hotel, game reserve or guide, but we are totally convinced that there is nothing better than a well organised holiday in the South African lowveld.
