Award Winning Wine Estate Holidays in the Cape Winelands
Stellenbosch
Perhaps South Africa’s best-known wine town, and the seat of one of its oldest universities, Stellenbosch is less than an hour’s drive from Cape Town and offers some of the best wines and wine tastings. While it’s best known for Bordeaux style red wines, it also produces pinotage, shiraz, chenin blanc, chardonay and sauvignon blanc. Some of the names you might recognise are: Asara, Kanonkop, Delaire Graff, Meerlust, Le Riche, Stark-Condé, Thelema, Tokara, Spier, Warwick, Waterford …….
Several of these, including Asara, Delaire Graff and Spier also boast outstanding hotels.

Franschhoek
As the name suggests, this is the centre established by the French Huguenot settlers in South Africa, whose contribution to the winemaking tradition of the area is unmistakable. The most picturesque and romantic of the wine towns, Franschhoek is also home to some of the best restaurants.
The grand old estates here include Haute Cabriere, Chamonix, Bellingham, Boekenhoutskloof, and of course Boschendal.
But there are many smaller boutique wineries like Colmant (specialising in Cap Classique Sparkling Wine) Dieu Donne, GlenWood, Mullineux & Leeu, Rupert & Rothschild, and many more. The area specialises in semillon and chardonay.

Paarl
The Paarl area on the main road from Cape Town to Johannesburg is one of the best established wine growing areas, and home to the exceptionally well known estates Nederberg, Laborie, Simonsvlei, Rhebokskloof, Landskroon, Backsberg and Fairview.
There are also lots of other increasingly well known producers such as Nwanedi, Ridgeback, Spice Route, Windmeul and Babylonstoren, which has a superb hotel. The area is known for voignier, chenin blanc and chardonnay, shiraz and pinotage.

Durbanville
Closest to Cape Town, practically in the northern suburbs, and therefore fantastically accessible, is the area of Durbanville.
De Grendel, Diemersdal and Meerendal ae the grand old estates in the area. They have been more recently joined by the hugely successful Durbanville Estates. Less well known, but equally exciting are a whole string of boutique wine estates, including Phizantekraal, Signal Gun, multi award winning Nitida, Bloemendal, Hillcrest and Klein Roosboom.
Almost all South African cultivars are produced in the area, with some notable sauvignon blancs and chardoneys, as well as shiraz, pinotage and pinot noir.
