Wonderful Wine Tasting Options in the Exquisite Constantia Valley
Most, but not all the Constantia Wine Estates were part of the original Groot Constantia estate and they have all benefitted from its rich traditions:
- Groot Constantia, which dates back to the 17th Century, has a magnificent Cape Dutch manor house, a wine museum and cultural history museum and an excellent restaurant, as well as beautiful grounds open to the public (our daughter had her fifth birthday party there). Groot Constantia has something for everyone. Its chardonnay and shiraz are particularly highly regarded but its greatest treasure is its desert wine, Grand Constance.
- Klein Constantia, was originally part of the Groot Constantia estate and has much in common with it, including an excellent desert wine, Vin de Constance, but it specialises in sauvignon blanc, reisling and chardonnay, with some cabernet sauvignon based red blends.
- Buitenvervagting, also originally part of the Constantia estate specialised in sauvignon blancs, and Bordeaux style red blends.
- Steenberg produces sauvignon blanc, semillon, cabernet sauvignon, merlot, shiraz, and nebbiolo, but its pride and joy is Magna Carta, a blend of sauvignon blanc and semillion.
There are other smaller estates like the exquisite Eagle's Nest, that has been producing only since about 2000 and produces sauvignon blanc, viognier, merlot and shiraz; Beau Constantia, a boutique wine estate that specialises in red blends; and Constantia Glen, which produces both white and red blends.
