Fascinating Options For Finding Out About History & Culture

Wherever you go there is always more than meets the eye, but there are many places that are worth a visit specially to find out more about the past and the way that local people live.

South Africa

South Africa has a particularly rich and fascinating history from the Cradle of Humankind to the Rainbow Nation, and it has rich and vibrant cultural diversity to explore.

• In Cape Town a tour of Robben Island, the jail where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned, is really interesting. There are also wonderful and very wide ranging museums and art galleries.
• In Johannesburg & Pretoria there are many wonderful museums, memorials and monuments.  The Cradle of Humankind is a must see for anyone interested in Archeology. There are old monuments, like the Voortrekker monument remembering the Dutch settlers, and many more commemorating the uprising against Apartheid and the subsequent establishment of the Rainbow Nation, such as the Constitutional Court in a building that used to be a jail. There is also a huge variety of art galleries.
• KwaZulu Natal is full of history, from the colonial battlefields to the site where Nelson Mandela was captured. It also celebrates the history and culture of the Zulu Kingdom through many cultural sites and activities.
• Many of the Private Nature Reserves have close relationships with the communities who live in neighbouring areas and they offer cultural experiences with those communities.

Qatar

Qatar has made major investments in cultural and historical institutions, and the Museum of Islamic Art and the National Museum of Qatar are particularly fascinating and important institutions. But there are also several other major galleries and museums, as well as current realities such as the lovely Souk.

Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi is also a great place to go for history and culture. The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is a fascinating cultural building, as well as being extremely beautiful, and then there are both the Louvre and the Guggenheim!  There are many other galleries and museums too, as well as souks and other contemporary cultural experiences.

Dubai

Dubai is also rich in history and culture, with at least two dozen museums of various sorts, along with the ancient area of the city.

Zanzibar

Stone Town in Zanzibar is a fascinating historic and cultural experience in itself, and also has a number of museums.

Kenya & Tanzania

There are plenty of historical sites along the East African coast, and in the major cities, such as Nairobi. Many of the nature reserves and conservancies also provide cultural interactions with local communities, specially with the Maasai and the Samburu in Kenya.
