Extraordinary Kalahari Desert Holiday Options
Truly 'far from the madding crowd' the Kalahari is still home to the last remaining San (Bushman) hunters, about 5000 of whom still live there. This is an arid world, largely untouched by modern life. Most game reserves are measured in acres. Not the Central Kalahari! It is about 20 000 square miles. And that doesn't include the Kgalagadi, Khutse, Mkagadikagdi Pan, Nxai Pan National Parks and hundreds of thousands of acres of private concessions.
Most of the Kalahari, including the Kgalagadi National Park (the Botswana section of the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park) and the Khutse National Park, is very inaccessible and can only be visited in four wheel drive vehicles for camping trips. This is definitely not a self-drive option unless you are extremely experienced and are going with others with similar experience. It is possible to arrange escorted camping trips and we are very happy to assist with this if you are interested. The more likely options are...
Central Kalahari Game Reserve
By far the largest game reserve in Botswana and, in fact, the second largest game reserve in the world, the Central Kalahari Game Reserve is truly vast. Originally a refuge for the San people, it has only gradually been opened up to visitors since the 1990s. It is best visited in the wetter summer months, when the northern part of the park, in particular, is home to large herds of game and plenty of predators.
There are lots of lions and cheetahs, as well as some desert adapted elephants and rhinos, but the density of game is not comparable with the Okavango Delta or Chobe.
There are also plenty of birds to be seen.
Overall, however, this is a destination to be enjoyed for the uniqueness of the vast scrubby plains.
Makgadikgadi Pans and Nxai Pan Game Reserves
How can you resist seeing a place with such a beautiful name?
This area, centred on ancient salt pans, is best known for a massive migration of 35 000 to 75 000 zebra and wildebeest that takes place during the wetter, summer months. As with the similar migrations in East Africa and western Zambia, the migration attracts a great many predators, and game viewing is excellent there at that time of year.
In the wet season the pans are also home to hundreds of thousands of birds, including Greater flamingos, which breed there.
It you are looking for a really unique African experience, whether you want to fly in and enjoy the experience in luxury or whether you are thinking about a camping tour, we can advise you and arrange your holiday for you. As independent agents, with access to all the lodges, camps and touring companies we can ensure that you have an unforgettable experience with the security of ABTA and ATOL protection.
