Tswalu & Amazing Arid Western Safaris
For an experience of Africa at its most authentic, the arid western parts of South Africa, on the fringes of the great Kalahari Desert have no equal.
Here the animals have had to adapt to the harsh, dry conditions. But you will not need to adapt because your hosts will pamper you in low key, but high standard luxury.
And your reward will be extraordinary and wonderful landscapes, and a much better chance of seeing extremely rare and beautiful sights that very few have seen.
The area is specially good for
- Cheetahs
- Aardvarks
- Pangolins
- Bat Eared Foxes
- Meercats
and many more.
We know the best way to explore this beautiful but harsh environment without going out of your comfort zone, and we will get you in and out, safely and comfortably. We will organise a wonderful ABTA and ATOL protected holiday for you. It will be completely flexible and we will be on hand 24/7 to make sure that your questions are answered and you have any help that you need.

Tswalu
Tswalu is unquestionably one of the best places in southern Africa to see cheetah in the wild. The vast open spaces and antelope herds of the Kalahari readily lend themselves to high-speed pursuits. Visiting Tswalu also gives front-row seats for sightings of species that prove elusive elsewhere, from aardvark and pangolin to Hartmann’s Mountain Zebra.
One of the very few mountain ranges in the southern Kalahari – the Korannaberg – casts a benevolent shadow over the rolling dunes and expansive grasslands of Tswalu. Tswalu also receives more rainfall than many other parts of the Kalahari.
In the shelter of the mountains – which also provide a dramatic backdrop to wildlife sightings – you can encounter Tswalu’s 240 bird and 80 mammal species, including Hartmann’s mountain zebra and wild dog, as well as lions, buffalos and many other exciting species.
There are two lodges in the reserve. The Motse and Tarkuni serve as focal points for a Kalahari experience, and as launchpads for safari adventures. Built from organic materials and outfitted to the highest standards, they manifest the warmth and hospitality of the people of the Kalahari.
Designed and sited to make the best of Tswalu’s dramatic and expansive views, The Motse and Tarkuni provide exclusivity, privacy, and unfettered access to one of southern Africa’s last true wildernesses.
